The Bahamas – Day 6

The Bahamas – Day 6

After a breakfast of pancakes, fruit and bacon for breakfast, we gathered (now 10 of us) to meet the taxis. The taxi took us to the ferry and then we took the ferry to Green Turtle Cay.  We walked around the town of New Plymouth, tiny and quaint and then rented golf carts.

We were off! Driving on the left felt a bit weird, but became familiar pretty quickly. Ian had been here before, so he was in the lead cart and took us to a beautiful beach.  I didn’t know that it was anything more than that, a beautiful beach.  There was a dock in the middle of the beach and we walked toward that, and then realized that the people who were already there were watching something in the water.

It turns out that this beach was where the sting rays swam right around your legs.  There were several of them and they actually touched your legs as the swam around…not mine, mind you!  I had to take that step back every time!  It’s a big deal for me to be in water with other living creatures. Don’t push your luck!

I went up on the dock and watched the sting rays, but then they were joined by turtles!  There were some people there in a boat who were encouraging the turtles to come close with bait. There were at least 2 turtles and you could feed them and touch them on the back.  We also saw a few Needle Fish. I had a great vantage point to get some pictures!

After some time on this beach, we headed off. This time we ended up at Tranquil Turtle Beach Bar and Grill and enjoyed lunch there. Starting with beverages, John enjoyed a Kalik Radler and I tried my first virgin Strawberry Daiquiri and loved it! I had fish tacos and John had a conch burger for lunch. We enjoyed our lunch and we were sitting at a table outside with the beach right there.

The focal point of the beach was a set of swings.  There were cornhole games and other fun things on the beach. After our meal, we headed out to the swings in the water. A word for the wise…if you get car sick, you likely will find swings, over water that is moving, a bit upsetting to your insides! Just sayin’!

The hill down to the restaurant and beach was pretty steep, so some people decided to walk up the hill, rather than load up the golf carts.  Our golfcart wasn’t quite as fast as the others and had smaller wheels, but we just had 3 on ours (Me, Sarah and Sara), so we just putted our way up the hill.  The whole island was beautiful scenery.

We got back to New Plymouth and then took this rough and rugged path, along the waters edge, to Pineapples Bar. Apparently, this is the only way into this bar by land, but really it was only fit for 4-Wheelers! They have a dock, and people come by boat. Again, the bar was on the water, and had a pool.  Seems to be a pool theme at the bars, but I haven’t seen anyone in the pools…Hmmm?!?!

We made our way back to the ferry (it cost $22 return for the ferry) and the ferry was pretty full on the return trip. Our cab drivers were waiting for us when we returned. We noticed a guy on the ferry with a gun tucked in his pants. The cab driver let us know that he was a plain clothes police officer. The cab driver knew most everyone that got off the ferry, because they do this run regularly.

We joined our neighbours (new friends) for supper on their deck. We had burgers, leftover pulled pork, carrot slaw, and roasted potatoes. We sure are eating well on this trip!

I had never had carrot slaw before, but it was very good. Haven’t tried to make it myself but apparently it was just grated carrot, grated onion, mayo, salt and pepper. I will be adding this to our menu in the future!
