Friday Five – April 19, 2024
  1. Quote: Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.Laura Ingalls Wilder       This week we finally had some more sunshine. Some of the days were still very chilly but we had a couple of very nice days with a bit of warmth. We used the BBQ a couple of times and generally spent more time outside. Loving spring and all it brings!
  2. Holstein Canada Classification – We had the classifier visit our farm today. The job of the classifier is to rate the cows based on the true type cow traits. This classification helps us make decisions with genetics as well as being an important guide for breeders wishing to buy our animals. The rankings are Good, Good Plus, Very Good, Excellent. There are a couple of other lower categories that we don’t even want to mention! We were pleased with our classification and happy to have a few new Excellent cows! The results of this day also contribute toward the Master Breeder points. We were in the top ten to receive our Master Breeder shield this year and so we are hoping to have enough points to win next year! Getting ready for this day involves a ton of extra work including clipping and washing, but when they do well, it makes the work all worthwhile. It is also one of the activities on the farm that we all care about and it brings us together as a family.
  3. Agriculture in the Classroom – This morning I paid a visit to Rawdon School’s Grade 3 class. I shared a slide show about our farm and answered questions they had. The students seemed very interested and asked lots of questions. I took jars and cream for them to make butter this afternoon. Hopefully, they really enjoyed that!
  4. Family Meals – This week we had a family meal to celebrate John’s birthday. The day didn’t go according to plan, so we ended up having BBQ cheeseburgers and cheesecake. The girls had helped me make a cheesecake the day before, and I made both a chocolate sauce and a raspberry sauce to top it. I enjoy having family meals, although it is difficult because it is between 7 and 7:30 when we have the evening chores done, and that makes it late for the little ones. Simon is traveling, so he missed this family dinner.
  5. Walking – The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting warmer, which allows me the opportunity to get out walking more often. Living in the country, and on a main road, makes it challenging to get out walking for much of the year. But, now is my chance. I hope people are sensible drivers this year and slow down and pull over when they see me out walking. I have to say there have been many days when people are driving like idiots out there and I notice it most when walking or when driving farm machinery.
