The Bahamas – Day 3

The Bahamas – Day 3

Up early again on Day 3 to see the beautiful beach at Treasure Cay for the first time. I walked to the east, the pink buildings, which I found out later were the Bahamas Beach Club Resort.

I came back to help make breakfast of French toast with fruit and cream cheese along with some bacon. The kitchen was well equipped in the villa and we were surprised at how many essentials were in the fridge and cupboards.

Ian arrived at 8:00 a.m. He had brought the boat from Marsh Harbour this morning. He joined us for breakfast and shortly after breakfast, we boarded his boat (his boat’s name is Out N About). The first stop was the inlet between Scotland Cay and Guana Cay. In between these two cays, you can see the Atlantic Ocean which was considerably rougher than the more sheltered water we were traveling on. The little inlet between these two cays often goes dry/sand bar, at low tide. The tide was fairly low but the area wasn’t drained completely. We were able to walk around with water up to about our knees, and we discovered many treasures in the water. Sarah found a sand dollar. We discovered a small turtle, which we inadvertently formed a circle around. When the turtle discovered he was surrounded (you could see him look up and look in each direction) he took off towards Sarah almost flying on top of the water. Sarah jumped back and we joked that the turtle felt she was the weakest link. We discovered some conch and then we went around the corner and discovered several more conch. The limit for conch each day for the boat was six so we picked out the six largest ones and brought them home with us.

We boarded the boat again and headed to  Great Guana Cay. This island has Baker’s Bay at one end which is a gated community for celebrities and other wealthy individuals. Obviously, we didn’t go to that part of the island. Where we docked there was a bar called Grabbers. Ian thought we should walk to the other bar called Nippers first.

Nippers was on the other side of the island just a short walk away and had all sorts of cute sayings on signs in the trees leading up to it. When you arrive at this bar and grill you are on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The surf is incredible and the beach goes on forever. The bar is mostly pink; it had a pool that is not operational now and a little store. The store had promotional products from Nippers and had a sand floor. This was the first time I’d ever been in a store that had a sand floor. There were a few different levels to the bar and the view was amazing from everywhere. You could look off one side and see the Atlantic and look to the other side and see the Caribbean from the upper deck of the bar.

We enjoyed a drink at Nippers and then headed back to Grabbers to grab another drink. Grabbers was not as impressive: it was basically an outdoor bar in a cabana but it also had a pool and that pool was operational. It had a dock that was exclusively for patrons of the bar.

We got back in the dinghy and back on the boat and headed towards Treasure Cay. We were heading into the sun on the way back and arrived at the marina area just as the sun was setting. Bill was given the job of hooking the mooring with the gaff, a job which he took quite seriously.  He did a fine job; as Ian approached the mooring Bill hooked on…and then his feet slipped and he landed on his belly on the side of the boat. We all laughed so hard! Better luck next time?

The barbecue at the Villa was a charcoal barbecue, so we stopped at the Mini-Mart and bought charcoal. Getting it going was a different matter – we finished the chicken in the oven! The chicken pieces in the Bahamas seem to be quite large. We had rice, carrots and beans to go with the chicken and cheesecake that Ian had purchased to celebrate my birthday. All in all a great first day at the Villa and on the boat.
